A few weeks ago, Motorola launched the new G7 series of smartphones with four models spread across different price categories. The G7 Power was launched in India soon after at a price of Rs 13,999. Since then, the Indian smartphone market has seen the launch of the new Redmi Note 7 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy M30 smartphones at similar prices, if not cheaper. Sensing competition, Motorola brought the Moto G7 to India and is selling for Rs 16,999. The G7 will only come in one variant with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.
The Indian variant of the Moto G7 is similar to one that was launched in Brazil. Therefore, you get the same the Snapdragon 632 chipset and a large narrow-bezel display with a waterdrop notch. Similar to older Moto G phones, the Moto G7 runs on stock Android 9 Pie with Moto experiences thrown-in for good measures. In fact, the G7 looks pretty identical to last year's Moto G6, save for the notch and the rear camera module layout.
If you are to spend close to Rs 17,000 in the Indian market, is the Moto G7 worth your investment? Here's what you need to know.

Moto G7 isn't the most feature-rich phone under Rs 20,000

--If you are looking for a smartphone that can play demanding games such as PUBG and Asphalt 9, the Moto G7 is not the one you should opt. The Redmi Note 7 Pro starting at Rs 13,999 offers a Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 chipset with 4GB RAM. The Note 7 Pro has far proven to be quite a powerful smartphone under the Rs 20,000 category, second to the Snapdragon 845-powered Poco F1. The Moto G7, on the other hand, gets a Snapdragon 632 chipset, which is a slight improvement over the Snapdragon 625 and is inferior to last year's Snapdragon 636 chipset.

--When it comes to the cameras, the Moto G7 lags behind the competition with a 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup. Motorola says the camera can do Portrait mode, Spot Color, Cinemagraph, Auto Smile Capture and Google Lens. However, Redmi Note 7 Pro offers a segment-leading 48-megapixel primary camera with the Sony IMX586 sensor. The Samsung Galaxy M30 even offers a triple camera setup with a dedicated wide-angle camera.

--The Moto G7 is powered by a 3000mAh battery, which could manage to last an entire day with light usage. The Redmi Note 7 Pro offers a bigger 4000mAh battery that can offer more than a day's battery stamina under moderate usage. The Samsung Galaxy M30 offers a 5000mAh battery that can even deliver close to two days of battery on a single charge.

Where the Moto G7 has the potential to excel

--The Snapdragon 632 chipset isn't meant for performance oriented phones. However, with an almost stock version of Android, the Moto G7 should be able to deliver an overall smooth performance on a daily basis. Moto's custom touches with intuitive gestures and shortcuts also help to enhance the experience, as seen in previous Motorola devices.
--The Moto G7 comes with a stylish 3D glass body. Compared to the eye-catching gradient colours on the Redmi Note 7 Pro, the Moto G7 looks elegant. The G7 only comes in black and white colours. If you prefer subtle and understated designs on your smartphone, the Moto G7 should come across as a better choice.
--Motorola offers a fast 15W TurboPower charger with the phone. Therefore, despite having a smaller battery, the Moto G7 can be topped-up faster.

Should you go for the Moto G7?

Until we have the Moto G7 for a full review, it's difficult to comment on the phone. However, if you have been a Motorola loyalist and prefer the company's subtle-yet-stylish approach to building affordable smartphones, the Moto G7 isn't a bad choice. It would probably be sensible to wait for the prices to drop though. On the other hand, if all you need is a more powerful and feature-rich smartphone, the Redmi Note 7 Pro is still the undisputed king, on paper.
